Pickoffs

Pickoff at First (1-3)

Runner on 1st 0 out P → 1B, tag at first

The standard pickoff. The pitcher comes set, then makes a quick, accurate throw to the first baseman holding the runner, who applies a fast low tag.

Ball Bag Backup

  • P
    Pitcher Ball

Come set, hold, then make a quick chest-high throw to the first baseman's glove at the bag.

  • C
    Catcher Bag

Watch the runner's lead, call the throw, and be ready if he breaks for second.

  • 1B
    First Base Bag

Hold the runner on, give a low target, take the throw, and apply a quick tag.

  • 2B
    Second Base Bag

Cover second base in case the runner breaks on the throw.

  • 3B
    Third Base Bag

Cover third base and stay alert for a trick play.

  • SS
    Shortstop Backup

Slide behind second base to back up the throw.

  • LF
    Left Field Backup

Read the throw and back up first base from the outfield.

  • CF
    Center Field Backup

Drift toward second base to back up an overthrow.

  • RF
    Right Field Backup

Sprint in behind first base to back up the pickoff throw.

Key point

A pickoff is timing and accuracy, not heat — a chest-high throw the runner must dive back to beats a 'wild' one into the dugout.

Drill

Hold-and-throw reps with a runner taking a lead; vary the timing so the pitcher isn't predictable, first baseman works a quick low tag.

Watch for

A lazy throw the runner reads easily, or a rushed one that sails — the out comes from disguising the timing, not the velocity.

Pickoffs

Daylight Play at Second

Runner on 2nd 1 out SS sneaks in → P throws on 'daylight'

The shortstop sneaks in behind the runner. When the pitcher sees daylight open up between the runner and the shortstop, he spins and throws to second.

Ball Bag Backup

  • P
    Pitcher Ball

When you see daylight between the runner and the shortstop, spin and throw to second.

  • C
    Catcher Bag

Time the play, give the signal, and guard the plate.

  • 1B
    First Base Bag

Cover first base and hold any trail runner.

  • 2B
    Second Base Backup

Back up second base behind the shortstop on the throw.

  • 3B
    Third Base Bag

Cover third base in case the runner breaks that way.

  • SS
    Shortstop Bag

Sneak in behind the runner on the pitcher's read and cover second for the tag.

  • LF
    Left Field Backup

Back up second base from left-center.

  • CF
    Center Field Backup

Charge in to back up second base.

  • RF
    Right Field Backup

Back up second base from the right.

Key point

The daylight play is a read, not a count: the pitcher throws only when he sees space open between the runner and the shortstop sneaking in.

Drill

Pitcher–shortstop daylight reps: the shortstop drifts behind the runner, the pitcher reads daylight and throws; no throw if the lane isn't there.

Watch for

A pitcher throwing to an empty bag because he didn't confirm the shortstop was there — see daylight AND the fielder first.

Pickoffs

Timing Play at Second (2B)

Runner on 2nd 0 out Silent count: 2B breaks, P throws blind

A pre-set timing play. On an agreed silent count, the second baseman breaks to the bag and the pitcher throws without looking — pure trust and timing.

Ball Bag Backup

  • P
    Pitcher Ball

On the agreed count, turn and throw to second base — trust your second baseman is there.

  • C
    Catcher Bag

Flash the count signal and guard the plate.

  • 1B
    First Base Bag

Cover first base and hold any trail runner.

  • 2B
    Second Base Bag

On the count, break hard to second base, take the throw, and apply the tag.

  • 3B
    Third Base Bag

    Cover third base.

  • SS
    Shortstop Backup

Back up second base behind the second baseman.

  • LF
    Left Field Backup

Back up second base from left-center.

  • CF
    Center Field Backup

Charge in to back up second base.

  • RF
    Right Field Backup

Back up second base from the right.

Key point

A timing play is a trust play — the throw and the second baseman's break happen on the same count, with no look to tip it off.

Drill

Silent-count reps: catcher flashes the count, second baseman breaks on it, pitcher throws blind — rep the timing until it's automatic.

Watch for

Either man being late breaks the play — a throw with nobody there, or a fielder arriving after the ball. Same count, every time.

Pickoffs

Catcher Back-Pick at First

Runner on 1st 1 out C → 1B behind a lazy lead

After receiving the pitch, the catcher snaps a throw behind a runner who took too big a secondary lead off first.

Ball Bag Backup

  • P
    Pitcher Backup

Get off the mound toward first to back up the throw.

  • C
    Catcher Ball

Catch the pitch and snap a quick, low throw down to first behind the runner.

  • 1B
    First Base Bag

Sneak back to the bag, give a low target, and apply the tag.

  • 2B
    Second Base Bag

Cover second base in case the runner breaks.

  • 3B
    Third Base Bag

    Cover third base.

  • SS
    Shortstop Backup

    Back up second base.

  • LF
    Left Field Backup

Back up first base from the outfield.

  • CF
    Center Field Backup

Drift toward second base to back up.

  • RF
    Right Field Backup

Sprint in behind first base to back up the throw.

Key point

The back-pick punishes a sloppy secondary lead — it works because the runner relaxes after the pitch. Sell it with a quick, low throw.

Drill

Catcher back-pick reps right after receiving the pitch; the first baseman times his sneak-back to the bag with the throw.

Watch for

Throwing it into right field because nobody's covering — the first baseman must read the back-pick and get to the bag.

Pickoffs

Catcher Back-Pick at Third

Runner on 3rd 1 out C → 3B behind a walking lead

With a runner taking a big walking lead off third, the catcher fires behind him to the third baseman sneaking back to the bag.

Ball Bag Backup

  • P
    Pitcher Backup

Break toward third base to back up the throw.

  • C
    Catcher Ball

Read the walking lead and snap a throw to third behind the runner.

  • 1B
    First Base Bag

    Cover first base.

  • 2B
    Second Base Bag

    Cover second base.

  • 3B
    Third Base Bag

Sneak back to third, give a target, and apply the tag.

  • SS
    Shortstop Backup

Back up third base behind the bag.

  • LF
    Left Field Backup

Sprint in to back up third base from the outfield.

  • CF
    Center Field Backup

    Drift in to back up.

  • RF
    Right Field Backup

Drift in to back up the infield.

Key point

A runner who walks his lead off third is asking to be back-picked — the catcher and third baseman just need a signal and quick feet.

Drill

Catcher-to-third back-pick on a set signal; the third baseman breaks back to the bag as the catcher receives the pitch.

Watch for

No backup behind third — an overthrow here scores the run, so the pitcher and shortstop must rotate in behind the bag.
